Orbital has been a favorite of mine ever since I found electronic dance music. I loved Duran Duran when I was a kid because of my older sister. Then my brother introduced me to the Smiths and Stone Roses. He and I found electronic music together in the mid-90's (we argue about it to this day, he bought Prodigy after seeing the video for Poison, I bought the Orb after seeing them on the cover of NME for UFOrb).

In 1996, there was no Glastonbury so several of the electronic acts came out to the US to support the new "electronica" movement. I went for the Orb but soon discovered Orbital, Underworld and the Chemical Brothers. Orbital was the big breakout act for me because of Organic and I've seen then a dozen times. One of the highlights of my life was getting to see them at Glastonbury in 1999, a truely amazing experience.

Nada Surf do "Enjoy the Silence". All this reminds me of is Failure's version and after that I went on a huge google adventure trying to see what the bands are doing at the moment. It also reminded me of the last versions of the touring Lollapalooza. Tool were headlining and Failure were also on the bill. Do to someone backing out, Failure opened up the main stage and then 4 or 5 hours later they headlined the second stage. First and last time I have ever seen the same band play twice on the same day.

Mogwai Makes a Live Film

Mogwai's Burning will be screening in England later this month. It's a live film that has been directed by Vincent Moon and Nathanaël Le Scouarnec. Vincent Moon has directed videos for R.E.M. and made the National documentary, A Skin, A Night. The duo together have directed a live movie for Arcade Fire as well. So Mogwai are in capable hands. Mogwai, those veteran Glaswegian purveyors of loud/soft/loud/soft instrumentals, are back with their sixth studio album The Hawk Is Howling, the follow-up to 2006's Mr. Beast. I've only been listening to the record for 24 hours, but track five, the 7-minute "The Sun Smells Too Loud," is without a doubt Hawk's catchy, shimmery, slightly nostalgic pop piece. Really, the majority of the 10 tracks have a downcast, melancholic, or at least darker bent, which makes it a curious first taste. (By the way, best song titles go to chilly opener "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead" and moody, cinematic soft-to-loud scorcher "I Love You, I'm Going To Blow Up Your School.") - Source

Start the Starsailor Bashing

NME is reporting that Mogwai and Ash have started to bash Starsailor for their success in England. Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai said that Walsh would "rape his own granny" to achieve fame. Starsailor's next single, "Alcoholic", is out on September 17th and their album, "Love Is Here", will be out on October 8th. The full tracklisting is inside.

Mogwai Comes Back to the US

MOGWAI are returning to the US for one New York show this Monday. They were just signed to Matador Records who will release their album, "Come On, Die Young" on April 6th. According to the Matador website, this will be the last US show for Mogwai until their tour this fall.
