John Lennon Used in a Car Commercial? Rage!

A French car maker, Citroen, has used a clip from a John Lennon interview in their commercial.  I shouldn't say a "clip" since it's really the bulk of the commercial, it has Lennon saying:

"Once a thing's been done it's been done, so while this nostalgia -- I mean for the '60s and '70s, you know, looking backwards for inspiration, copying the past -- how's that rock 'n' roll?  Do something of your own. Start something new, you know? Live your lives now. Know what I mean?"

Fans were obviously upset and Sean Lennon came to Yoko Ono's defense saying that, "...intention was not financial, was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world".

  • Throughout the day the station will be playing music that inspired John (ie. Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, etc).
  • Several guest artists have gone into Abbey Road to record cover tracks specifically for the ocassion. Guests include: Paul Weller, Trashcan Sinatras, Lulu, Gomez, Badly Drawn Boy and more (even... the Sugababes with a cover of 'Come Together').

You can listen live to both stations today or the material will remain up on the web for at least a week.

FBI's Remaining Lennon Files To Be Released

The FBI were keeping tabs on JOHN LENNON in the early seventies for his anti-war stance. Jonathan Wiener, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, has been in a twenty year battle with the government to get the files released. In 1997 the FBI released 300 pages of their files but Wiener continued the suit and finally won for the remaining ten pages to be released.

It Would Have Been His Birthday...

Yesterday, on what would have been JOHN LENNON's 62nd Birthday (Oct. 9) , YOKO ONO has awarded the first ever LennonOno Grant for Peace. She awarded the prize of 50,000 USD to two artists from Palestine and Isreal on the work they've done to promote peace during "the intense political situation we all live in." Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan was quoted as saying, "peace is everybody's business -- not just an issue for governments."

On an secondary note, Mark David Chapman was denied parole again yesterday for the second time.
