The End of Oasis? One Can Only Hope

Can't those pesky OASIS lads stay out of the news for ONE day? Apparantly not, with music journos of the world chiseling out a tombstone for the band based on last weekend's shows at Wembley. All hype aside, it DOES appear as though time is running out for the Good Ship Gallagher, as Hurricane Liam punctuated the band's weekend set by being as much of an arse as possible. On estranged wife Patsy? "Bitch." On Noel? "We've been touring the world making money for you while you sit at home." On Wembley?

GOMEZ have announced details of their latest release. It's a b-sides & rarities compilation to be titled, "Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline." The album, which DOES include their cover of The Beatles' "Getting Better" (made famous thanks to all those Phillips TV ads,) is scheduled for a UK release on Sept. 25 - no word yet whether it'll see a Stateside release.

Idiots

It has recently come to my attention that there is a plague growing in this world. It halts logical reasoning, corrupts the mind, and causes terror in the hearts of noble men's souls. It is doubtful even the recent Human Ge-Gattaca-Here-We-Come-Nome Project can save us. Yes, I'm talking about idiocy. Because lately, I have run across quite a few people parroting around each other with remarks about what is the usefulness of modern radio. There's my theory (here), there's fellow columnist Shane's numerous theories (most recently here), and then there are many variations of both filtering in over the past several months. What strikes me as unusually disturbing as of late are some very vocal opinions on the whole thing. Namely: why does any self-respecting music fan care if a radio station plays a readily-owned and personally-treasured song 4,304 times per day or -- on the converse -- never at all? The answer I have run across over the past few weeks usually ends up resting on a simple, "Because that means somebody who has never heard the song before might like it."
     The plague grows stronger.

Belle And Sebastian Skip Tour Duties

Twee fans over the world must be muttering a sweet disgruntled sigh as they slip on their schoolboy uniforms this morning, as NME is reporting that BELLE AND SEBASTIAN will NOT be touring in support of their new album. The band, known almost as much for their eccentricities as their music, was expected by some to launch a comprehensive tour after the chart success of recent single, "Legal Man." Instead, the band have announced they'll be taking the rest of the year off.

Liam and Patsy Split

Noel may be back, but Patsy's flown the coop. That's official word today from OASIS management, who have confirmed that singer's Liam Gallagher's marriage to actress Patsy Kensit is over. The couple, who have a son named Lennon, confirmed the much-rumoured split via the band's publicist. In other Oasis news, brother Noel rejoined the live Oasis this weekend in Dublin, and audience reports showed a highly-fueled, non-bickering set. The elder Gallagher maintains that he will only play live with the band during their UK dates.

Eight Dead at Roskilde Festival

Tragedy has struck at this weekend's ROSKILDE FESTIVAL in Denmark. At least 8 concert-goers were trampled and crushed to death at the front of the main stage during Pearl Jam's stint on Friday night. The band, only a few songs into the set, stopped the show and urged the crowd to move back, but it was too late. At least 26 people have been injured, and early wire reports show either 8 or 9 fatalities.

Is NME Against Napster?

Not news so much as a quick opinion from Shane this morning (and please realize that my views aren't necessarily those of this site - usually I keep my opinions to my columns, but this one is brief): Is it just me, or is NME decidedly AGAINST Napster? Over the past two weeks, NME has been seemingly trying to cause as much scuttlebutt as possible over the already controversial program.
