Dump #3: Shaun Ryder, Sonic Youth, National, MBV in 8-bit, DJ Shadow, Tool, and a Dave Navarro Reality TV Show!
February 03, 2011
Let's see how much of this stuff I can put together. I'm trying to keep on top of my links by using twitter (which automatically goes to facebook) so if you wanna get this info faster please follow us there (some of the stuff below is probably duplicated on twitter and facebook as well)
- Shaun Ryder has a new greatest hits collection out. But that's not the crazy part, apparently he was in the UK version of "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Outta Here". I'd really like to see this for some odd reason.
- Brooklyn Vegan has a bunch of pictures of DJ Shadow's most recent tour, "The Shadowsphere". Pretty cool.
- Yoko Ono said she didn't break up the Beatles. I guess that puts an end to that.
- The Charlatans' drummer, Jon Brookes, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, played his first show on New Years Eve. Glad to see he's back.
- WHAT THE WHAT? Maynerd James Keenan (lead singer for Tool) is in a documentary called Blood Into Wine. It's about him making a vineyard in Arizona. The documentary is also streaming on Netflix right now.
- Have you ever wondered what would My Bloody Valentine sound like if it was on the soundtrack to your favorite Nintendo video game? Once again, the internet to the rescue! (via reddit, of course)
- Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction filmed a reality show for MTV called "Grounded" where he moved home and performed "domestic" duties. Yeah, can't imagine why it didn't get picked up. Watch the unaired pilot at Slicing Up Eyeballs. --- watched 3 minutes --- holy shit this is train wreck bad.
- MGMT played at Day Trotter last month, good times.
- Yann Tiersen recently released his sixth album, 'Dust Lane' and is currently touring the US. He's most known for doing the amazing soundtrack to one of my all-time favorite films, Amelie. I downloaded a bootleg of his performance at Coachella and it was pretty impressive. I'm looking forwarding to seeing him live.
- Pandora is integrating with Toyota. Good bye radio! (My car has the Bluetooth hookup to my iPhone so anything I can play on the phone gets played on the car. That includes the iPod app, Pandora, last.fm, my subsonic server, anything. It's pretty damn awesome.)
- Trail of Dead and Surfer Blood will be heading to America in April. I've said it before and I'll say it again, one of the greatest songs ever made is Trail of Dead's "Relative Ways".
- Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake and Gorky's Euros Childs are in a new band "Jonny" and they signed to Merge Records. They make fun poppy music.
- Trent Reznor was recently nominated for an Oscar for The Social Network. He's also writing the score for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Which is a silly remake of the Swedish adaption of the book. Did you know that if you have Netflix you can stream ALL three movies based on teh books right now?
- Nick McCabe (Verve guitarist) is going to appear on Greg Dulli's band, Twilight Singers. It will be their first album in 5 years and it's titled "Dynamite Steps".
- Sony is shutting down a 50-year-old plant. It started making vinyl records and at it's peak it was making 18 million CDs a month.
- Alan McGee is pondering a Creation Records movie. There's already a documentary called 'Upside Down' that's doing the festival circuit this year. Hopefully a swift DVD release is in order since there's no chance in hell it's going to play in a real theater in Riverside, CA.
- Arcade Fire will perform at the Grammy's on February 18th. Three hours of shit for 3 minutes of good music? Maybe I'll just wait 'till February 19th to see it online and read about them losing 'Album of the Year' to Katy Perry. Or maybe I can see La Roux beat The Chemical Brothers for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Seriously, La Roux is fuckin' horrible.
- Cold War Kids are touring throughout March and the beginning of April. Their tour starts in Oregon on March 3rd, and ends at Coachella in Indio, CA. Their new album, "Mine is Yours", is out now. Check out the video for their new song, 'Louder Than Ever'.
- Grizzly Bear has a bunch of music in the 'Blue Valentine' film that's currently in theaters.
- Echo & the Bunnymen are going to be touring the US in May and will be playing 'Crocodiles' and 'Heaven Up Here' in their entirety.
- SanDiego.com interviews Jason Loewenstein from Sebadoh on the eve of their US tour. The reissue of Bakesale and Harmacy comes out on April 11th.
- Watch the full episode of Austin City Limits with the National and Band of Horses.
- OR you can check out the awesome Sonic Youth episode of Austin City Limits.
