Fairly Orbital Heavy, But there's Good News From Glen Hansard, Dandy Warhols and Spiritualized
Orbital has been a favorite of mine ever since I found electronic dance music. I loved Duran Duran when I was a kid because of my older sister. Then my brother introduced me to the Smiths and Stone Roses. He and I found electronic music together in the mid-90's (we argue about it to this day, he bought Prodigy after seeing the video for Poison, I bought the Orb after seeing them on the cover of NME for UFOrb).
In 1996, there was no Glastonbury so several of the electronic acts came out to the US to support the new "electronica" movement. I went for the Orb but soon discovered Orbital, Underworld and the Chemical Brothers. Orbital was the big breakout act for me because of Organic and I've seen then a dozen times. One of the highlights of my life was getting to see them at Glastonbury in 1999, a truely amazing experience.
Purge #2: Death Cab, Joy Division, Smiths, Cypress Hill, Radiohead (as usual), She & Him, Elbow, Muse, Badly Drawn Boy and more
Here's the next round of updates that I've written over the last couple of months but never got around to posting. Enjoy!
Duran Duran Spinoff Band, Arcadia, Will Reissue Only Album
Back in 1985, the biggest "boy band", Duran Duran, split up into two bands. Two members, John and Andy Taylor, went off to create the Power Station and the remaining three members (Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, and Nich Rhodes) went off to create Arcadia. While Power Station sound more rock-ish, Arcaida had a different unique sound. At the time I was nine years old but I distinctly remembering playing the vinyl for "So Red the Rose" over and over again and I was glad to read from Slicing Up Eyeballs, that they are going to reissue the original album with the original album, remixes, and a DVD with all the videos plus "making of" vignettes for each video. Duran Duran - Verona, NY - 03/30/05
I've said it before and I'll say it again - for the life of me, I cannot figure out why the return of the original line up of Duran Duran has not been greeted with the full-on enthusiasm that it most definitely deserves, especially after experiencing last night's performance at the Turning Stone Casino Events Center in Verona, New York. [Where? I live 90 miles from there and I had only a vague idea where it was until last night.]
Inland Invasion 3
The Cure, Duran Duran, Hot Hot Heat, Echo and the Bunnymen, Violent Femmes, Psychedelic Furs, Interpol, Marc Almond of Soft Cell, Fountains of Wayne, Berlin, Kings of Leon, and Dramarama
Hyundai Pavilion, San Bernardino, CA
September 20, 2003
The Hyundai (formerly Blockbuster) Pavilion is the probably the worst place to see a concert.... unless you're in the first ten rows. If you're in the lawn (like most people) then just forget about it. You might as well be watching it on TV because you're going to be spending the whole day staring at the jumbo-screens. Today's lineup is pretty impressive and it's the first time that I ever heard of the "nation's largest amphitheater" selling out.
I Suppose Its Very Nice
This one's been in the rumor mill for about six months now, but we can officially confirm today that DURAN DURAN are reuniting with ALL original members for a new album and possible tour. Simon, Nick, John, Andy, & Roger (didn't he quit to be a FARMER?) are back - hide your make-up kits!
Summer Tours
Summer Tours Preview, Part One: The summer and fall of 1998 will feature several bands and artists from the early MTV-era slogging about the U.S. for one more hurrah. Perhaps the biggest of the package tours features Culture Club , The Human League , and Howard Jones . Check out our tours page which should have the complete schedule for this tour within the next few days. Snyth pioneer Gary Numan , former teen-heart-throb John Taylor , and those happy-go-lucky lads from Kraftwork will also be touring the U.S. this summer, to say nothing of the seemingly endless Gene Loves Jezebel comeback tour. Can Xymox be far behind? The fall could feature some high-profile 80's standouts returning to U.S. shores, with both Depeche Mode and a New Order reunion tour possible.
